Dear readers
June arrives like a soft exhale and finally longer days of fun and beach weather. June marks the end of the academic year, the real start of summer, and a natural moment for calm, quiet and reflection with family and friends. At The International, this month’s edition brings together stories of courage, creativity, community, and change. Whether you’re new to Denmark or deeply rooted here, these narratives capture the spirit of transformation that defines both summer and international life.
We begin with two powerful stories by Ophelia Wu. First, she speaks with Rowena Doyle, who moved from Dublin to Copenhagen guided only by curiosity and partly caffeine. Her journey shows what’s possible when you lean into change. Ophelia also interviews David Biffani, the man behind Copenhagen’s beloved pizzeria, Mother. His story blends Italian heritage, sourdough, and community - served with heart and hustle.
In #TheForgottenGold, Greg McQueen introduces us to Pouya Ghatei, an Iranian refugee who waited six years for the chance to contribute. Now reunited with his mother, he’s racing to catch up - and deserves the spotlight.
Leslea Petersen reminds us that joining a club in Denmark can unlock job opportunities, friendships, and a sense of belonging. In midlife metamorphosis, Alexandra Beck reframes menopause and andropause not as decline, but as a source of strength in transformation.
Anna Pawlowicz shares the moving words of Maggy Barankitse, founder of Maison Shalom, who calls on us to act with love and dignity for all humanity. In a different kind of comfort, Natasha Liviero, our Pastry Chef, offers a classic Italian recipe - Torta della Nonna - proving that heritage can be savoured in a single slice.
Jess Hearne brings us the layered story of Marmorkirken, while Mariano Anthony Davies tracks the rise of LEGO, from Billund to global giant. Natalia E.L. Madsen’s We are Nature article urges us to reconnect with the planet, starting with awareness.
In an honest interview, Natália Šepitková speaks with Ilana Buhl about parenting in Denmark, from maternity leave to bilingual kids and integrating into society. Monika Pedersen reflects on June’s transitions in schools and how we can help children move through change with care.
Heather Storgaard rounds out the issue with island-hopping inspiration, showing that summer adventure might be just a ferry ride away.
We’re thrilled to share some exciting news - Ophelia Wu, with her strong background in publishing, has joined The International as our new Deputy Editor, Content & Partnerships. While she’ll continue to contribute her sharp and engaging writing, her new role will focus on expanding our global reach and strengthening key collaborations. We’re so excited to see the impact she’ll make as we take The International to the next level.
As we head into the long days of summer, it’s the perfect time to pause and celebrate the people who make The International what it is:
To our writers - thank you for your insight, passion, and unique perspectives.
To our photographers - thank you for capturing powerful stories in a single frame.
To our social media team and ambassadors, thank you for transforming moments into movements and building bridges through reels, images, and community engagement.
And to you, our readers and community, thank you. For seven years, your support has kept this platform alive, evolving, and full of purpose.
